App Store Preview Video Template

A short, vertical structure for an App Store or Google Play preview: in-app footage first, one idea per shot, and captions that work without sound. Always confirm the current specs in Apple's and Google's documentation.

Updated 17 October 2026
Quick answerBuild the preview from real footage captured in your app, lead with the main feature in the first few seconds, give each shot one short caption, and keep it within the store's length limit. Confirm resolution, length and content rules in Apple's and Google's current docs.

When to use this template

Use it for the preview video on your App Store product page or the promo video on Google Play. Store videos follow stricter rules than social posts: Apple's guidelines have historically asked for footage captured from the app itself and set length and resolution requirements per device size. Google Play has historically used a YouTube link for its promo video. These rules change, so confirm them in Apple's App Store Connect help and Google's Play Console help before you export.

For social promotion of the same app, the mobile app template gives you more creative freedom. Our app store preview video specs guide explains what to check.

The structure explained

  1. Main feature (0–5s). The reason people download the app.
  2. Second interaction (5–10s). How it feels to use.
  3. Differentiator (10–18s). What competitors do not do.
  4. Platform feature (18–23s). Widgets, watch app, offline, sync.
  5. Reassurance (23–27s). Privacy, no sign-up, accessibility.
  6. Name (27–30s). App name.

There is no logo reveal at the start on purpose. A store visitor has already seen your icon and name; the preview's job is to show the app in use as quickly as possible.

Store pages may show the first frames as a poster image. Make sure your opening shot looks good as a still.

Example caption script

Store previews usually autoplay without sound, so write the captions first and treat any voiceover as optional.

  1. "Plan your week in seconds"
  2. "Drag tasks into your day"
  3. "Smart reminders that know your schedule"
  4. "Widgets for your home screen"
  5. "Private by design. No account needed."
  6. "[Product]"

Customising tips

  • Capture on the device. Record with the phone's built-in screen recording, with a clean status bar and notifications off.
  • Avoid device frames and hands unless the current guidelines allow them; stores have favoured in-app footage.
  • Check the exact pixel dimensions. Spotlight exports 9:16 MP4 at 1080p; compare that with the resolution Apple or Google list for each device size, and conform it in a video tool if they differ.
  • Localise captions. If your listing is localised, make a caption version for each major language.
  • Lead with the feature people search for. Your preview and your store keywords should tell the same story.
  • Keep captions short. Four to six words per shot is a good target; the video plays small on a store page.

Before uploading, watch the preview muted, on a phone, at the size it will appear on the store page. If you cannot tell what the app does within the first few seconds, move your strongest shot to the front.

Scene-by-scene plan

9:16 · about 30s · Clean style

  1. Video clip — “Plan your week in seconds”
Open on the main feature, in the app. Store previews often autoplay muted, so this shot does the selling.
  2. Video clip — “Drag tasks into your day”
Second core interaction. One idea per shot, one short caption.
  3. Walkthrough — “Smart reminders that know your schedule”
A slightly longer flow showing a differentiator.
  4. Video clip — “Widgets for your home screen”
A platform-specific feature, captured on the device.
  5. Text reveal — “Private by design. No account needed.”
A short trust or reassurance caption over app footage.
  6. End card — “[Product]”
App name only. Avoid prices, rankings or claims stores may reject; check the current guidelines.
